( Details ) Edition Details : Book 3 | Dimensions: 214 Pages, 5 x 7 in | Series Title: A Series of Unfortunate Events | ISBN: 0064407683 Published: February 2000 | Published by HarperCollins Children's Books chapters.indigo Review The third book in the Series of Unfortunate Events finds the hapless Baudelaire orphans -- 14-year old inventor Violet, bookish 12-year old Klaus and the toothy infant Sunny en route to live with a distant aunt, whose desolate house dangles precariously over the aptly named Lake Lachrymose. Aunt Josephine -- widowed since her beloved husband Ike Antwhistle (get it?) drowned in the ominous Lake -- is nice enough, but she's a fanatical grammarian and afraid of absolutely everything, which doesn't make for particularly adventurous living. Still, Violet, Klaus and Sunny try to make the best of it, until the suspiciously familiar Captain Sham appears on the scene. Events unfold quickly thereafter, including a dubious suicide note, a fearful hurricane and a daring sailboat trip across the tossing lake filled with hungry -- and remarkably organized -- leeches. These darkly comical books just get better and better -- the writing is wry and witty, perfect for independent readers and a great read for adults, too (deliciously dark references like Damocles Dock would go unappreciated otherwise). The author uses his favourite devices to their best advantage: Sunny's nonsensical baby talk is translated into complete, polite sentences; challenging vocabulary is defined in the funniest possible context; and the now-familiar formula -- kids find home, villain finds kids, kids lose home -- heightens the anticipation of the next plot twist. Ages 10 and up. From the Publisher Dear Reader, If you have not read anything about the Baudelaire orphans, then before you read even one more sentence, you should know this: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are kindhearted and quick-witted, but their lives, I am sorry to say, are filled with bad luck and misery. All of the stories about these three children are unhappy and wretched, and the one you are holding may be the worst of them all. If you haven’t got the stomach for a story that includes a hurricane, a signaling device, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible villain, and a doll named Pretty Penny, then this book will probably fill you with despair. I will continue to record these tragic tales, for that is what I do. You, however, should decide for yourself whether you can possibly endure this miserable story. With all due respect, Lemoney Snicket Store Review Suzanne-Marie from Chapters # 931, Belleville, ON This is the third book by Snicket, and they just keep getting better! The Bauldelaire orphans go to live beside a beautiful lake with their lovely Aunt Josephine. She even has beautiful gifts for the children, but anyone knows their lives are anything but beautiful! Aunt Josephine is afraid of everything from answering the phone to using the stove to cook dinner, therefore they are forced to eat cold cucumber soup. They encounter a hurricane, meet Count Olaf yet again, as well as the dreaded Lake Lachrymose leeches! Suspense-filled drama can easily describe this book! About the Author Lemony Snicket grew up near the sea and currently lives beneath it. To his horror and dismay, he has no wife or children, only enemies, associates, and the occasional loyal manservant. His trial has been delayed ,so he free to continue researching and recording the tragic tales of the Baudelaire orphans for HarperCollins. I think this book is number 1!!! 2. Amazing, exotic, exciting, and LEMONY! Reviewer: Dr. Broccoli from Milton, ON (captain_french_fry@hotmail.com) Date: 12/16/2000 6:02:09 PM This book is THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ! It is exciting and funny. I like how Lemony explains what words mean that you might not know. 5 STARS! 3. The Morbid Baudelaires Reviewer: Kath from Calgary, Alberta Date: 8/26/2000 7:25:00 PM But, as midly morbid as this book happens to be, it's still an amazing read! Another gaurdian, another disaster, another brush with death, and worse, Count Olaf, and there you have it! Read past the discouraging front pages and back cover, and you find a delightful tale of woe. They outwit all the grown-ups, and try to save people, but just their luck, it never seems to work. They just get away from falling-down houses, boat-rental owners, and a lakeful of leeches with an aunt who ate a banana. These books are written in an interesting style, and have an interesting plot to boot, and put together it makes a really wonderful book. Don't believe the back. 4. good job lemony sniket! Reviewer: girl power from winnipeg Date: 6/11/2000 4:26:49 PM I think that this book is very well published and that he should recieve an award of going so deeply into a child's heart!!!!
