( Details ) Starring: Ewan McGregor , Natalie Portman , Hayden Christensen Director: George Lucas Video Release: November 2002 | Theatrical Release: 2002 Runtime: 142 Rating: PG (MPAA) Released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment | UPC: 024543055396 chapters.indigo Review There were high hopes -- and expectations -- for George Lucas' first-ever all-digital feature film and for some of the harder-to-please viewers, the best that could be said was that there was hardly any Jar-Jar this time. But that's a bit harsh -- effects-wise this was an amazing cinematic experience. Now, if only we could fix the dialogue.... Attack of the Clones opens with Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and Anakin (Hayden Christensen) about to meet Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) for the first time in ten years, again in the role of protectors -- the former queen is now a Senator, threatened because of her resistance to building an army of the Republic to put down a fomenting separatist movement. A foiled assassination attempt separates Master from Padawan as Obi-Wan goes to the planet Kamino, where thousands of clones are being created and trained in secret; and Anakin spirits Padmé away into hiding on her home planet of Naboo. The arrogant Anakin is distracted by the flattery of Chancellor Palpatine, by his mother's abduction on Tatooine and his forbidden love for Padmé, but in the end everyone ends up on Geonosis where the separatist forces, led by the sinister Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), have made their secret headquarters. The battle scene between the Battle Droids and Jedi is extremely cool; the clone factory on Kamino is incredibly imaginative and the chase through the flightpaths of Coruscant in undeniably thrilling (to say nothing of Yoda's moment of triumph). But whenever the action slows down, the dialogue trips up the entire film. Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor are clearly trying their best, but they simply have nothing to work with, and the love scenes between Portman and Christensen are teeth-grindingly painful. Christensen in particular was difficult to watch at times -- there were moments when one could see the future Sith scourge of the galaxy coming through, but overall, the character was mostly played with textbook Skywalker I was going into Toshi Station to pick up some power converters whininess. Keep your fingers crossed for Episode Three.
