The most famous poet of the Jazz Age, Millay captivated the nation: She smoked in public, took many lovers (men and women, single and married), flouted convention sensationally, and became the embodiment of the New Woman. Thirty years after her landmark biography of Zelda Fitzgerald, Nancy Milford returns with an iconic portrait of this passionate, fearless woman who obsessed America even as she tormented herself. Chosen by USA Today as one of the top ten books of the year, Savage Beauty is a triumph in the art of biography. Millay was an American original—one of those rare characters, like Sylvia Plath and Ernest Hemingway, whose lives were even more dramatic than their art. About the Author Nacy Milford’s Zelda spent twenty-nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in hardcover, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and was translated into twelve languages. Nancy Milford was a Fulbright Scholar in Turkey in 1999, and an Annenberg Fellow at Brown Unviersity. She has taught at the University of Michigan, at Vassar College, and will be in the American Studies Program at Princeton University this fall. She is a founder of the Writers Room, has held a Guggenheim Fellowship, and is a Literary Lion at The New York Public Library. She lives in New York. From the Trade Paperback edition. The result is this compelling, keenly perceptive life of Edna St. Vincent Milay -- with its own savage beauty." -- Toni Morrison "SAVAGE BEAUTY is irresistible, Nancy Milford gives us not only the life of Edna St. Vincent Millay, but also her heart, her times, and the sparkling essence of her poetry." -- Amanda Foreman "Millay lives! And she casts a spell over the reader as mesmerizing as her poetry. Nancy Milford has done it again -- and ZELDA has met her equal." -- Bill Moyers From the Trade Paperback edition. At 500 plus pages, what is surprising is not how long the book is, but rather, that Milford so seamlessly and with such seeming ease, manages to fit so much into so few pages. The name Edna St. Vincent Millay may not have much meaning to us today, but in her time, she captivated a nation that desperately needed an escape from a repressive society plagued by economic depression and global conflict. Millay was just the person to provide this distraction. Having grown up the oldest of three girls with a single, working mother, Millay gave voice to the burden of responsibility that girls and women felt in a society that offered few options to women outside of daughter, sister, wife, mother. As a girl, Millay created a world for herself and her sisters that promised something better. The young Millay sisters escaped to a world of song and poetry, but hidden behind this fragile Info Desk iREWARDS Program About Our Company Affiliate Opportunities Careers Contact Us Corporate Sales Gift Certificates Privacy Policy Shipping Rates Store Locations Wish List chapters.indigo.ca: books Shopping Bag | Account Centre | Wish List | Help iREWARDS Program | Corporate Sales | Store Locations All Products Books DVD Video Gifts Books Advanced Search Search Tips About this Book From the Publisher About the Author Read from the Book Review Quotes Reader Reviews Biography & Memoir Artists, Architects and Photographers Business Composers and Musicians Entertainment and Performing Arts Historical Literary People of Colour Philosophers Political Reference Religious Royalty Sports Browse Books View all Categories .
