I am not sure quite why but this year my favourite fiction books have all been by first-time writers. When I first read the synopsis of this book – a young girl is raped and murdered by a serial killer – I said to myself, This is not for me. Fortunately, I was on an airplane and this book was the only one in my briefcase. This tour de force is like nothing you would imagine. It is compelling, beautifully written and a page-turning mystery. After you read it you will want to recommend it to everyone. The subject matter sounds really bad but she has written it in such a way that it isn't sensationalizing on the pain, suffering and ultimately, the death of a 14-year-old girl. It speaks more of feelings than of blood. I was very disappointed with the ending though. I was also told that this was a great read, and I should read it anyway. When I started to read this book, I could not put it down! It is written with such feeling, that you go through what the character goes through. The more you read, the more you get lost in the book. I will admit that the ending does take a weird turn, but I don't feel it takes anything away from the story line. I am going to tell everyone I know to read this book. It is, at times, sweet, sad, slow, disappointing and uplifting. It is a book that needs to be read.
