As young adult readers will learn in this addition to The Royal Diaries series, princesses can be threatened with death, exiled from their own homes and forced to trust no one -- especially their own families! Written in adventurous first-person by Newbery Honor author Kathryn Laskey , Elizabeth I: Red Rose of the House of Tudor details the young Elizabeths life from 1544 to 1546 during King Henry VIIIs turbulent reign and Elizabeths own turmoil with her half-sister, Mary. From the Publisher A diary that introduces readers to a young Elizabeth I and the intrigue of her father's court from 1544 to 1546. November 10, 1544 I have been living with this constant fear of exile now for two days. So far I have heard nothing. Plans seem to proceed as normal for our move to Ashridge. This palace, too, is becoming quite filthy, what with all the banqueting and people and gaming between Michaelmas Feast and the feast of All Saints' Day. The roses bloom in our garden with such vigor, but the stench from the courtyard over the wall outside the kitchen is unbearable. Kat is mumbling something about baths again. The woman is becoming a fanatic. I think we have had half a dozen baths since summer... Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 12 1. Elizabeth I Reviewer: Alyssa from Winnipeg, Manitoba Date: 2/9/2003 8:12:20 PM This is an excellent book. Elizabeth just seems to be the most able queen I can think of - she never married and ran her country like a decent ruler should. She was a little bit of a trouble maker, but oh well! I loved this book. 2. Excellent book Reviewer: Catherine from Toronto, Ontario Date: 2/1/2003 4:02:12 PM I loved this book very much because I could relate to it and felt like I was in Elizabeth's shoes. It's a must read. 3. A Truly Great Queen Reviewer: Annie from Whitby,Ontario (annie5432.yahoo.com) Date: 4/13/2002 9:44:42 AM Kathryn Lasky wrote the book really well! In her writing, she really saw and felt how Elizabeth did then. It's nearly impossible to find writers like that now. I've learned more about Elizabeth and I have to say, she was a truly great queen. I admire her for that. She succeeded in a man's world and it seemed that no woman could. The way the author wrote is though that she felt that way too. 4. Elizabeth the First Reviewer: Elizabeth from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada Date: 4/3/2002 7:28:47 PM I must say that this is the most wonderful book.[The whole series] takes you into the lives of princess who lived in times of crises. This particular book tells you about the Princess Elizabeth who's famous father, Henry VIII is ignoring her again. It takes you through almost her whole life. If you would like a follow-up Beware, Princess Elizabeth, by Carolyn Meyer is an excellent investment, though it is hard to find. The whole series is wonderful investment and should become a family favourite. Oh, The latest ones are Mary, Queen of Scots, and Sondok, Princess of Moon and Stars. I can not wait to read them!!! 5. Elizabeth the Excellent Reviewer: Tommie C from Angus,Ontario Date: 6/3/2001 8:25:14 PM This book astonished me! Queen Elizabeth the first was a really good leader for her country. She was so brave and courageous! I really enjoy the book series and the author as well. I hope to find more on Good Queen Bess and the book series! :) Read all of the reviews...
